Facts About the Ancient Catacombs of Rome

History of the Roman Catacombs

What to expect

    • Expect to walk through narrow, dimly lit underground tunnels carved into soft volcanic rock, often no wider than shoulder-width.

    • Temperatures stay between 12–15°C year-round, so bring a light jacket even during summer months.

    • Most catacombs require you to descend and ascend over 100 steps, with no elevators or ramps available.

    • Walls are lined with thousands of burial niches, with some areas housing family crypts and tombs of early Christian martyrs.

    • You’ll see ancient frescoes, inscriptions, and symbols that reflect early Christian beliefs and burial customs.

    • Lighting is minimal to preserve the artwork and environment; flash photography is not allowed, and in some areas, photos are prohibited altogether.

    • Some catacombs offer self-guided audio tours, while others require joining a guided group for access.

    • The confined spaces and silence may feel overwhelming for visitors with claustrophobia or anxiety in tight areas.

    • Visitors are expected to remain quiet and respectful throughout the experience, as the catacombs are considered sacred ground.

    • There are no restrooms inside the catacombs — use facilities outside the entrance before starting your visit.
